No more dog rescue and adoption groups at the Market
It is with regret that we must relinquish all animal rescue and adoption activities at the Davis Farmers Market. This decision has not come easily. It is solely in response to our liability insurance provider. After much discussion, the Davis Farmers Market Association’s board of directors decided on April 20th that since the Market is not insured for on-site animal rescues or activities, pet rescue and adoption organizations are no longer allowed at the Market.
While this decision will impact some long-standing activities that patrons of the Davis Farmers Market have enjoyed, we hope the residents of Davis, the Market vendors and shoppers, and all of you who support the Davis Farmers Market can understand why the decision has been made.
In addition, we would like to clairfy that dogs on leashes with their owners are welcome on the grassy areas of Central Park, outside the boundaries of the Market. The Market is defined as a “food facility” by the Yolo County Environmental Health Department and as such, animals are not permitted within the food areas. (The Farmers Market is similar to a supermarket, where dogs are not allowed). Market manager Randii MacNear explained, “While we know our customers enjoy bringing their animals with them to the Market, we hope pet owners will cooperate by not bringing their pets into the Market selling and eating areas. We hope everyone understands that we are required to comply with many regulations in operating the Davis Farmers Market.”
